The Grand Tour

A grand front porch with a stuccoed archway frames the front door. An entrance hall with reclaimed tiles leads to two welcoming sitting rooms, connected by a set of double doors framed by Delft tiles. In both spaces, soaring ceilings are traced by intricate cornicing, and each has an original fireplace. The room at the front of the plan is bathed in light from a tall bay window, while the other has a sliding door through a double-height kitchen and dining area.

Here, a pitched ceiling with tongue-and-groove panelling is punctuated by a series of skylights. A large marble splashback complements restaurant-grade stainless steel work surfaces and kitchen units, while large floor-to-ceiling French windows extend the view into the garden across the entire wall. Concrete floors have underfloor heating, there is also a handy utility room, as well as a walk-in pantry.

The principal bedroom sits on the first floor. Illuminated by a bay window, period features include original floorboards and a fireplace. An attached dressing room has fitted storage. Vintage glass-panelled double doors from English Salvage reveal a vast en suite bathroom. Two ‘cabins’ with Moroccan zellige tiling and antique glass-panelled doors house a WC and a walk-in shower, while an antique roll-top bathtub occupies a central position beside a working original fireplace.

An additional bedroom on this floor is lined with ‘Ticking Rose’ wallpaper from Buchanan Studio and has a smart en suite bathroom. Three further bedrooms are found on the second floor, each with tongue-and-groove panelling. An antique oak architrave frames the entrance to a shared bathroom on the landing, finished in playful pink, yellow and monochromatic tiles.

A covered garden room is perfect for entertaining and would also be suitable as a studio area. It has wall-mounted heaters, a butler's sink and electricity.

The Great Outdoors

To the rear of the house is a peaceful and generous garden with lawned and paved areas and established planting. A magnificent apple tree sits at the centre of the lawn, as well as five other trees that provide a canopy of pink and white blossom in the spring. Tranquil and restorative, it has a transportative feel that belies its proximity to central London.

Borders are filled with roses, peonies, lavender, rosemary and anemones, whilst a wisteria frames the garden room. There are also raised beds providing fertile ground for a vegetable patch to the side of the kitchen, with additional space for storage.

Out and About

St Mary’s Road is close to Harlesden’s brilliant high street. The area is well-served with plenty of restaurants, cafés and pubs; Rubio is a local favourite for breakfasts out, while The Grand Junction Arms is a Victorian pub with a hidden terrace above the canal.

The green expanses of Roundwood Park are a 10-minute walk from the house. Grade II-listed, it teems with wildlife and has several sports courts and playgrounds, a café and outdoor gyms. The house is also close to the highly popular College Road in Kensal Green, with its independent shops, restaurants, pubs and cafes.

Harlesden High Street is an experimental gallery space working with, and providing resources for, underrepresented artists. The local library is a short five-minute walk from the house, and there is a Nuffield gym a 10-minute cycle away.

There are plenty of schooling options in the area; in particular, Maple Walk, the popular independent preparatory school, is less than a 10-minute walk away. Others include John Keble Primary School, St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Primary School, Newfield Primary School, Brondesbury College and Paddington Academy.

Willesden Junction (Bakerloo, Lioness, and Mildmay lines) is 15 minutes away on foot, or two short bus stops from the top of St Mary's Road; from here, services reach St Pancras International in 17 minutes, Oxford Circus in 24 minutes, and Westfield Shopping Centre in Shepherd’s Bush in eight minutes. There is easy access from the house to the A1, A4, and M25.
