“A considered colour palette lends a calming atmosphere to this late-Georgian house”
Moments from the banks of the River Thames, this late eighteenth-century, Grade II-listed house sits within the Milton Conservation Area in Gravesend, Kent. Extending to 1298 sq ft, the house is arranged across four floors, including a versatile basement. Its period features have been carefully retained, including original fireplaces, wall panelling and timber floorboards. At its rear is a secluded garden planted with fragrant apple trees, providing a serene extension of the living spaces.
Setting the Scene
Gravesend has a rich history shaped by its position on the Thames. First recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as ‘Gravesham’, the town developed around its riverside location, an important route to London and beyond. East Terrace occupies a quiet corner of the historic town. Built around 1797, the handsome row of houses are classic example of late-Georgian architecture with brown brick façades and multi-pane sash windows.
The Grand Tour
The entrance opens to the living room, where oak flooring runs underfoot, offset by warm cream and khaki-toned panelling. An original fireplace, with ornate cast ironwork and a carved white mantelpiece, introduces the heritage of the house. Next door, the dining room is painted in a soft green shade, incorporating full-height wall panelling.
At the rear, the kitchen was added to the plan in the 1990s, washed in a cheerful hue of yellow paint that amplifies the sense of light and volume. Shaker-style cabinets run alongside solid wood countertops, with a Belfast-style sink and an Italian gas stove and oven.
Original wooden stairs rise to the first floor, where the principal bedroom occupies the front of the plan. A generous sash window draws in natural light, while an original fireplace preserves the period character. There is ample built-in storage. Beyond, the bathroom has been painted in a playful blue shade with a red-and-white checkerboard flooring underfoot.
Two well-proportioned bedrooms are arranged on the second floor. One has built-in storage and carefully retained Georgian wall pegs, while the third bedroom looks out over the garden. Access to the loft provides additional storage space.
A basement provides scope for additional living or storage space, subject to necessary permissions.
The Great Outdoors
The rear garden is a serene setting, with apple trees, established planting, and an outdoor seating area set against the backdrop of climbing ivy. A gravel pathway, set among lush green shrubs, leads to a spacious shed that allows for storage for garden tools and outdoor equipment.
Out and About
East Terrace is just a short walk away from the River Thames, where Gravesend’s riverside promenade offers an inviting route for an afternoon stroll. Nearby, Gravesend’s town centre brings together a mix of historic streets, shops, cafes and restaurants. The house is moments from Gordon Gardens, with its lake and promenade. The town is within easy reach of the wider Kent countryside and coastal towns.
There are some excellent schools nearby, including Gravesend Grammar School, Saint George’s Church of England School, and Bronte School.
Gravesend Railway Station is a 10-minute walk from the house, providing high-speed rail links into London St Pancras in around 24 minutes. Ebbsfleet International Station is also close by.
