Described by Cadw as “a well-preserved and rare example of a 17th-century two-storey gabled porch house of regional vernacular importance”

Situated on the south-westerly fringe of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, Tŷ Llwyd is a remarkable Grade II-listed farmhouse immersed in a largely pastoral landscape. Dating to the 17th century, it has strong period integrity, its long life told through textured stone walls and exposed Welsh oak frames. The home is made up of three buildings, masterfully brought together into a comprehensive architect-designed plan with five peaceful bedrooms. Outside, private grounds of around 25 acres create a sense of total privacy and are divided between landscaped gardens, paddocks, and enchanting pockets of woodland.

Setting the Scene

Tŷ Llwyd was built in the early 1600s as a farmhouse serving the surrounding land; Cadw has described its front elevation as “showing the influence of Renaissance ideas”. Its name translates to ‘grey house’, presumably a reference to its stone construction, although up close, a tapestry of multi-coloured rubble is visible.

A wealth of original features remains within, along with later 19th- and 20th-century additions. Under current ownership, the house has been resolutely reimagined, using materials like slate, oak and stone alongside carefully curated paint schemes and thoughtful features, including blue pennant flagstone floors and locally reclaimed slate. Practical, eco-conscious considerations include the installation of a ground-source heat pump.
